Men's Basketball snaps four-game slide with win at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC – Catawba College snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating host Mars Hill 78-72 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Indians improve to 8-15 overall and 3-7 in the SAC, while Mars Hill falls to 12-11 and 2-8.
After falling down by seven early in the final half, Catawba rallied behind 17 second-half points from Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA). Tied at 34-34 at the break, Mars Hill opened up a 43-36 marking in the opening two and half minutes of the final frame. A pair of free throws by Phipps and three more by Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) reduced the margin to 44-41. The Indians eventually regained the lead at 48-46 on a three-pointer by Brian Frasier (Martinsville, VA) with 13:48 remaining and would not trail again.
Phipps would then score eight of the Tribe’s next 10 points as the Indians gained a 58-53 lead. A jumper by the Lions’ Dominique Williams (Savannah, GA) tied the game at 61-61 with 6:37 left and the teams would battle through three more tied before a pair of free throws from Magnusson with 1:34 left gave the Tribe the lead for good at 74-72.
Alex Luyk (Madrid, SPAIN) added a bucket with 55 seconds left and the Indians made two of six free throws in the final 30 seconds for the final margin. Phipps led Catawba with 19 points, while Luyk added 18 and Magnusson 13. Williams led all scorers with 25 for Mars Hill.
