Cold Shooting Night Dooms Women's Basketball in Loss to Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate got 24 points from Kayla Harris and picked up a 71-53 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs improve to 12-3 overall and 8-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-7 and 6-5.
The Bulldogs held Catawba scoreless over the first five minutes of the contest, but the Lady Indians took a 10-8 lead on a three-pointer by Jelena Ciric (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sporska Gimnzija/Miami-Dade CC) at the 11:05 mark. The game was tied 13-13 following a three-pointer by Catawba's Janna Dixon (Advance, NC/W. Forsyth HS) with 9:15 left before the break, but would that would be the last points by the Lady Indians the rest of the half.
Wingate finished on a 14-0 run to lead 27-13 at intermission. Catawba shot just 14% (5-of-36) in the half and committed 10 turnovers. Janitsha Williams had 10 of her 16 points in the first half for Wingate.
Catawba was able to cut a 16-point to just six after five minutes of the second following a pair of free throws by Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, NC/Academy at Smith/Charleston Southern). Wingate took control midway through the final half behind Harris. Harris scored eight of 10 Wingate points to close a 17-4 run the pushed the Bulldog edge to 55-34 with eight minutes left.
Harris made 8-of-10 shots on the night and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the line. She added eight rebounds. Wingate hit on 48% for the game and made 68% in the second half.
Catawba did improve to 45% shooting in the second half, but finished at 28% (19-of-67) for the game. The Lady Indians were 3-of-25 (12%) from behind the arc. Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) and Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge HS) each had 14 points for Catawba. Huntley added nine rebounds with McPhail pulling down seven.
Catawba next hosts Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
