Softball stays unbeaten after sweep of Queens

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College earned a pair of one-run games to sweep visiting Queens in softball action at Whitley Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 3-2 and 1-0. Catawba improves to 4-0 with the wins, while the Royals drop to 0-2. Catawba fell behind 2-0 in the opener after run-scoring singles by Erika Brummel and Bethany Lodge in the first and fourth innings. The Lady Indians had left 10 runners on base in the opening four frames, including twice leaving the bases loaded. Catawba finally broke through in the fifth. Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) was hit by a pitch to force home the Tribe’s first run, then Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) followed with a two-run double down the left field line to put Catawba up 3-2. Queens got the tying run to second with no outs in the seventh, but Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) got a line out and a strikeout to avoid further trouble. Phelps earned the win in relief, allowing just two hits with one walk over three and a third innings of work. Laura Benoit, of Queens, was the only player on either team to collect two hits in the opener. Michelle Duguid took the loss for the Royals, allowing five hits with five walks and five strikouts. The fifth was again the key inning for Catawba in game two. After a scoreless battle, where neither team hardly threatened to score early, the Lady Indians got a two-out single from Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) to plate the lone run of the game. Queens got a runner to third with two outs in the sixth and got a leadoff double from Benoit in the seventh, but could not push a run across. Jenny Webster (Amherst, NY) earned the win for Catawba, pitching a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA), who allowed three hits and struck out four in her four innings. Phelps registered the save with two innings of work. She surrendered three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jennifer Churchill took the loss for Queens, allowing just the one run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Benoit and Brummel had two hits each for Queens. #####
