Women's Tennis Picked Seventh in SAC Preseason Poll; Men Eighth

ROCK HILL, SC -- The Catawba women were tabbed seventh and the men eighth in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.  The poll was released by the conference office on Thursday.  Wingate was the favorite in both polls.

Wingate’s women – the three-time defending SAC Champions – earned eight of the 12 first-place votes in the preseason poll.  The Bulldogs are coming off a 2013 season in which they went 19-6 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the conference.  The Bulldog men tied for third in the SAC standings at 7-2 last season, finishing 16-11 overall.  The Bulldogs received five of the possible 12 first-place votes in the preseason poll.

2013 SAC runner-up Tusculum is second in the 2014 women’s preseason poll, and received the other four first-place votes.  TC finished just one game back of Wingate in the conference standings last year, going 8-1 against league foes.

Anderson is third in the poll, followed by No. 4 Newberry, No. 5 Queens, No. 6 Lincoln Memorial and No. 7 Catawba.  Newberry and Catawba tied for fourth and LMU finished sixth in last year’s SAC standings, while Queens’ 2014 season will mark its first in the conference.

2013 SAC co-regular season champion Tusculum is second in the men’s poll, while last year’s Food Lion SAC Tournament champion Lincoln Memorial is third.  Tusculum earned three first-place votes in the poll, while LMU received two.

For the women’s preseason All-SAC teams, Wingate is also the only school to place multiple student-athletes on the singles team.  WU’s Ali Evers and Becca Thomas earned selections to the team, joining Newberry’s Susana Aguirre, Carson-Newman’s Stefy Stand, Anderson’s Avery Owens and Catawba’s Liz Renteria - the 2013 SAC Co-Freshman of the Year.

Thomas and Evers also form one of the preseason All-SAC doubles tandems, along with Newberry’s Aguirre and Romina Adum, and Anderson’s Owens and Karen Ching.

Adum, Wingate’s Morgan Winston, Mars Hill’s Tatiana Dualiby, Brevard’s Michelle Prata, Catawba’s Sloan Kessler and Queens’ Christina Rustscheff form the second-team singles lineup, while the tandems of Catawba’s Kessler and Renteria, Mars Hill’s Dualiby and Anna Rickenbaker, and Tusculum’s Amanda Sumner and Emily Waters are the second-team doubles honorees.

Renteria went 16-8 at #1 singles last year for Catawba.  Kessler played the #2 spot in singles and posted seven wins.  As a duo, the two were 10-13 at #1 doubles with three league wins.

The 2014 SAC men’s tennis preseason All-Conference Team is headlined by the conference’s defending Player of the Year, Lukas Winkelmann of Tusculum.  He is joined on the singles First Team by teammates Jonas Winkelmann and 2013 SAC Freshman of the Year Nicolas Planchard, Newberry’s Vinicius Botelho, LMU’s Marcello Alvim and Carson-Newman’s Juan Sebastian Perez.

Making up the first-team doubles tandems are Botelho and Michael Saunders of Newberry, Planchard and Lukas Winkelmann of Tusculum, and Alvim and Will Sparks of LMU.

The Catawba women open the spring portion of their schedule at UNC Pembroke on Feb. 6.  The men start off at JC Smith on Feb. 8.  The first home match for the men will be vs. Pfeiffer on Feb. 11 with the women hosting Lees-McRae along with the men on Feb. 13.  The 2014 Food Lion SAC Tennis Championship is scheduled for April 16-18 at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, SC.
