Baseball Upended by Lynn in Opening Doubleheader
BOCA RATON, FL -- Host Lynn swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting and 24th-ranked Catawba on Saturday afternoon at the Lynn Baseball Field. The Fighting Knights picked up the wins in the openers by both squads by the scores of 5-4 and 7-2.
The Knights grabbed a 5-0 lead after four innings of the opener. Lynn got to Catawba starter John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) in the third with three straight singles, two of the infield variety, to start the inning. An error helped the inning for Lynn, but the Fighting Knights collected five of the 11 hits off Tuttle in the frame and led 4-0.
Catawba made it interesting late. Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) drove in a pair of runs in the sixth on a triple to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the ninth, Zubillaga walked and Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) doubled him home to start the inning. Brooks would score on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.), but the Indians came up a run short.
Zubillaga went 3-for-3 with a couple of RBI. Brooks finished with two hits. Enrique Perez collected three hits for Lynn, while Tom Kain drove in two. Tuttle took the loss, working six innings and allowing five runs (four earned) off 11 hits. He fanned four. Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) tossed two innings of perfect relief.
Lynn erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal the sweep. Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS), who had tossed five frames of shutout ball, gave up a single to open the inning then allowed back-to-back doubles that tied the score. Following a Catawba error, Alex Freedman drove in the go-ahead run on an infield single. Before the frame was over, the Indians had used five pitchers and surrendered the seven runs on five hits.
Catawba had gone on top in the second as Zubillaga, who had singled with one out, came home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jon Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg). Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS), Zubillaga and Brooks all singled in the sixth as the Indians added a second run. Hawks did the honor, crossing the plate after a throwing error by Lynn.
Grant took the loss for the Indians. He allowed three runs (two earned) off seven hits. Jose Parra got the win in relief for Lynn. He gave up just one unearned run off three hits over five and a third innings.
Zubillaga added two more hits in the nightcap for the Indians. Alex DeBellis had three hits for Lynn. Perez had two hits and two RBI.
Catawba finishes up its Florida swing on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Nova Southeastern.
