Baseball settles for doubleheader split with Mount Olive
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and Mount Olive split a doubleheader in baseball action at Newman Park on Saturday afternoon. Catawba got a complete game from Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) to claim the opener 5-1, while Michael Erexson (Durham, NC) earned a complete-game victory in the Trojans’ 7-2 win in the nightcap. Catawba now stands at 5-4, while Mt. Olive is 6-4.
Hatley allowed just five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in the opener to raise his record to 2-0. Three of the Trojan hits came in the opening inning, where Catawba benefited from a caught stealing and a strike from Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) to gun down Brad Church (Garner, NC) at the plate to end the frame. In the second inning, Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) doubled home Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC), who led off with a double, to give the Tribe the lead. Lefko added a run-scoring single and Scott Searles (Boston, MA) hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 edge after two innings.
Mount Olive scored a run in the third without a hit, getting two walks and hit batter to score on a groundout by Craig Hurba (Oneonta, NY). The Tribe added two insurance runs in the sixth on a single by Searles and a goundout by Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC). Baker and Searles had two hits for Catawba in the opener.
Hurba delivered a two-run double in the opening inning of the nightcap to spark the Trojans. Southard singled home a run in the first for Catawba to cut the lead to 3-1, but a two-out, two-run single by Josh Carter (Goldsboro, NC) in the third built the Trojan lead to 5-1.
Baker homered for Catawba in the fourth, but Carter delivered another two-out, two-run single in the seventh for a 7-2 edge. Carter went 2-for-3 in the second game with five RBI. Hurba had three hits and a pair of RBI. Erexson surrendered just four hits and walked one in his complete game effort to earn his first decision of the year.
