Baseball Falls Short in Rally Against Nova

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL -- Nova Southeastern rode a three-run, first-inning home run to a 5-3 win over visiting Catawba in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex.  The Sharks improve to 3-0, while the 24th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 0-3.

The big blow came with two outs in the opening inning for Nova.  Brooks Fleming connected off Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) for the quick lead.  That would be the only blemish against Brooks over his five innings of work.  The junior gave up five hits, fanned four, but did walk five and hit two batters.

Catawba trimmed the lead to a single run in the fifth as Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) singled home a pair of runs to make it 3-2.  Nova added a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Alvin Swoope, but Catawba struck right back on a RBI double from Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) in the seventh.

The Indians left runners at the corners in the eighth and the Sharks picked up an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on a single from Swoope.  Catawba was able to load the bases in the ninth after a hit batter and two walks, but Josh Glick got the final out to record the save.

Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) collected three hits for Catawba and also gunned down a runner at the plate in the first.  Kronenfeld had two hits with the RBI.  Zubillaga continued his good start with his two RBI.  Swoope had three hits for Nova.  Fleming had two hits with three RBI and Mario Urdaneta also had a pair of hits.

Catawba out-hit Nova 10-9, but left 11 on base.  Nova stranded 10 runners.  Matt Hardy picked up the win in relief for Nova.  He allowed one run off three hits over two and a third innings.  Glick was tested in the ninth before getting the final out.  He did record all three outs via strikeouts.

Catawba is scheduled to play its home opener on Friday, hosting Florida Southern at 2 p.m.  The teams are set for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
