McPhail's 25 Points Helps Women's Basketball Top Queens 69-54
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got 25 points and nine rebounds from senior Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) in claiming a 69-54 victory over visiting Queens in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 10-9 overall and 8-7 in the SAC, while the Royals fall to 5-14 and 4-11.
Catawba stormed out of the gates, hitting eight of its first 12 shots to grab a 19-7 lead after eight minutes. Queens battled back and would take a 31-24 lead on a 13-0 run. The Lady Indians had the final spurt of the half to go up 34-31 at the break
The game stayed close during the early part of the second half, but Catawba eventually began to pull away. A three-pointer from Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) put the Lady Indians up 50-40. Queens pulled to within six with nine minutes remaining then Janna Dixon (Advance, NC/W. Forsyth HS) hit a three-pointer and Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, NC/Academy at Smith/Charleston Southern) a runner in the lane to push the margin back to double-digits.
Bully added 13 points in the win for Catawba and Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge HS) collected nine points. The Lady Indians committed a season-low four turnovers and just one in the opening half.
Nikia Squire (Columbia, SC) led Queens with 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, NC) picked up 13 points and had seven boards. The Royals held a 38-30 edge on the boards, but shot just 38% and had 13 turnovers.
Catawba travels to Tusculum on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off with the Pioneers.
