Baseball Drops Series Finale to Florida Southern 2-1
SALISBURY, NC -- Florida Southern posted a 2-1 win over host Catawba in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Moccasins improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-5.
The Moccasins scored a two runs in the third inning and Ben Richardson and a pair of relievers made it stand up. Richardson (1-1) went seven innings, allowing one run off four hits with six strikeouts. Nick Krolczyk earned his second save of the series as he tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
Catawba scored first in the bottom of the second. Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) singled home Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS), who had walked to open the frame. Florida Southern came right back in the top of third to take the lead.
Casey Eddinger singled with one out and went to third on a failed pick off attempt. Following a walk, Trevor Freeman doubled home a run to tie the score. What turned out to be the winning run scored on an overthrow to home after a shallow fly ball to center.
Neither team could break through over the final six innings. Hawks was robbed on a nice play in right field by Kyle Richards in the sixth that would have tied the game for the Indians. Catawba also stranded a pair in the eighth.
Eddinger had two of the four hits for Florida Southern. The Moccasins did draw seven walks. T.J. Wharton Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) collected a pair of hits for Catawba. The Indians had six hits on the day.
Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) took the loss for Catawba, falling to 0-2. He allowed just three hits and one earned run over six innings. Brooks walked four and struck out six.
Catawba travels to Pfeiffer on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. game before opening league play next weekend at Brevard.
