Women's Basketball Falls to Tusculum 85-61
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Maelyn Cutshaw and Nequoiah Anderson each scored 20 points to help Tusculum to an 85-61 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. The Pioneers improve to 5-15 overall and 5-11 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 10-10 and 8-8.
Cutshaw made just four field goals, but was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Anderson went 8-of-12 from the field as both players hit a pair of three-pointers. Blakeley Burleson also canned two three-pointers and finished with 18 points, while Shynese Whitaker tallied 17 points.
Catawba was led by Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge HS), who had three double-figure scorers, with 13 points. Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe Co. HS) added a dozen points and Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) 11, all in the first half.
Bully hit two early three-pointers as Catawba jumped out to a 12-4 lead. The Pioneers rallied and went on a 13-3 run to go on top 17-15 on Burleson's three-pointer at the 9:49 mark of the half. Although the game was close the rest of the half, Tusculum never gave up the lead the rest of the way.
A 12-1 run in the opening portion of the second half pushed Tusculum's lead to 49-33. Catawba got within nine, but after a three-pointer by Cutshaw the Pioneers led by double digits the final 12 minutes.
Tusculum managed to hit on 49% form the field while Catawba made just 35%. The Pioneers were nearly perfect at the line where they made 29 of 31 attempts (94%). Tusculum also held a 38-31 edge on the boards in part thanks to 15 rebounds from Kristen McMillion.
Catawba returns home to Goodman Gym on Wednesday, hosting Coker at 6 p.m. That game will be the Play4Kay breast cancer awareness night for the Lady Indians.
