Softball Opens Season With Sweep of Lander

GREENWOOD, SC -- The Catawba softball enjoyed a successful opening day, sweeping a doubleheader from host Lander on Saturday afternoon at Spears Field.  The Catawba Indians are 2-0, while the Bearcats remain winless at 0-6.

Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) had two hits and scored a pair of runs in the opening win for Catawba.  The junior led off the game with a double and came home on a two-out single by freshman Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS).  Lander got an unearned run to tie the game in the second, but the Lady Indians pushed across single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to regain the lead.

Morgan Brann (Beulaville, NC/E. Duplin HS) put Catawba back on top in the fourth as she singled home Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS), who had tripled with one out.  Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS) singled home the run in the fifth, while a single from Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS) capped the scoring for Catawba.

Caroline Turner (Kenly, NC/N. Johnston HS) got the start for Catawba and worked the first three innings.  She allowed the unearned run off two hits.  Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) posted the win with four innings of relief.  She surrendered one hit and fanned four.

Lander threatened in the sixth.  Tysinger gave up a leadoff single and would issue three of her four walks in the frame to allow the run.  Hannah Gatley drew the walk that forced home a run with two outs.  Tysinger worked a perfect seventh to end the contest.

Catawba took advantage of a first-inning error in the nightcap.  Naturile doubled home the first run and then came around to score on a single by Emily D. Huneycutt.  Those two runs would be all Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) would need as she tossed her 12th career shutout by twirling a two-hitter.

The Lady Indians scored in the third on a wild pitch then stretched the lead further in the later innings.  Gerone doubled home one run in the fifth and Shumaker doubled home two more in the sixth.  Both would finish the game with two hits.

Catawba is slated for its home opener on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Pfeiffer beginning at 1 p.m.
