Baseball On The Short End of Two One-Run Losses at Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Host Brevard swept a doubleheader from Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Coan Field. The Tornados claimed one-run wins by the scores of 7-6 and 1-0 to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 1-7 and 0-2.
Zach Joyce tossed a complete game one-hitter to finish off the sweep for Brevard. He walked four and fanned six. Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS), who falls to 0-3, pitched well again for the Indians. The sophomore allowed one run off five hits over six frames. He walked none and struck out one.
The game was scoreless until the sixth. Kody Spencer led off with a double and went to third on a groundout. Bennett Hixson capped a big day with a single to score the lone run. Spencer was the only Tornado runner to advance past first base in the game.
Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) made it third with two out for Catawba in the second and was at second with one out in the fifth before being erased trying to steal third. The Indians had only one baserunner after that, a two-out walk in the sixth.
Brevard jumped out quickly in the opener, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. A pair of walks started the inning, while back-to-back singles followed to plate the first run. A sacrifice fly and a single added two more runs and Hixson capped the inning with a two-run single.
Catawba answered back in the top of the second. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) followed two walks to start the frame with a RBI double and Mario Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) singled home two to cut the margin to 5-3. Parisi scored on an error and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) tied it on a sacrifice fly.
The Tornados retook the lead in the fourth as Aaron Goforth singled home Matthew Proffitt, who was hit by a pitch and stole second prior to the single. Catawba again came right back, tying the game on a two-out RBI single by TJ Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech).
Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) got the Indians out of trouble in the sixth as he struck out pinch hitter Alex Bedenbaugh with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Tornados capitalized on a leadoff error in the seventh to grab the win.
After Eric Renegar reached, Spencer singled. Following a pop up on a bunt, the Tornados pulled off a double steal. An intentional walk loaded the bases and Hixson delivered the winning hit on an infield single.
Wharton had two hits in the opener and produced Catawba's lone hit of game two. Goforth and Hixson each had two hits for Brevard in the opener and Hixson collected three RBI. Chip Helton picked up two hits for Brevard in the nightcap.
Neither starter factored in the decision in the opener. Catawba's John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) surrendered six runs in four and a third innings, while Kevin Hamilton allowed five runs in five innings for the Tornados. Trombino took the loss in relief, but allowed just an unearned run off three hits over two innings of work. Tyler Konzen grabbed the win for Brevard.
Catawba is set to host Pfeiffer on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
