Women's Basketball moves within a game of league title with 90-76 win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College maintained its two-game lead in the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 90-76 win over Wingate in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 19-5 overall and 9-2 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 16-7 and 6-5. Wingate led for most of the opening half until a late 11-4 run by Catawba gave the Lady Indians a 40-36 edge at the break. Wingate found itself in foul trouble midway through the opening half with the final ten minutes being played by the benches for both teams. Catawba got 31 points from its bench in the half, including seven from Ashley McMillan (Newnan, GA), a red-shirt freshman, who had been serving as a manager until two weeks ago. Catawba would lead the entire second half, but could not pull away until the final minutes. The biggest lead by Catawba was six on several occasions and at 63-57 before a run by Wingate cut the Catawba lead to 68-65 on a lay-up by senior guard Cathy Crutchfield (Concord, NC) with 4:25 remaining. Lady Indian sophomore guard Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) answered with a three-point field goal at the 4:12 mark, starting a 7-0 run for Catawba. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) finished the run with back-to-back layups, giving Catawba a 75-65 lead with 2:50 remaining. Wingate converted only two field goals in the final four minutes and would get no closer than seven the rest of the way. The Lady Indians hit 60 percent of their second half field goals (15-of-25) and the two teams combined for 55 fouls. Wingate hit 30-of-39 free throws, while Catawba converted 21-of-35 charity tosses. The Bulldogs committed 28 turnovers, allowing Catawba to nab 14 steals. The Lady Indians had just 17 miscues, but were out-rebounded 55-38, including 27-18 on the offensive glass. Catawba was led by Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) with 16 points, while Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) had 15 points off the bench, hitting five-of-seven field goals. Cox had 13 points and Little added 10 for the Lady Indians. Wingate’s Jessica Guarneri (Piscataway, NJ) led all scorers with 20 points. Veronica Taylor (Columbia, SC) notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. #####
