Wharton Ties RBI Record, Hits Two Homers as Baseball Wins Slugfest at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Junior T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) clubbed a pair of three-run homers and tied a school record with eight RBI to lead Catawba past host Pfeiffer 13-9 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Ferebee Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-7, while the Falcons fall to 5-4.
The Falcons had taken a 2-0 lead in the second, scoring on an error and a wild pitch, before Wharton whacked his first home run to put Catawba on top in the third. The Falcons went back on top with a four-run fourth. Dalton Lindley doubled home two runs with the final two scoring on an error and a sacrifice fly.
Wharton added another RBI in the fifth as Catawba answered right back. The Indians benefited from two errors in the frame to lead 7-6. It was Pfeiffer's turn to retake the lead in the see-saw affair with two in the bottom of the inning. A Zach Scudder single tied it and Cole McGraw drew a bases-loaded walk for the 8-7 lead.
Each team scored a run in the sixth before Wharton put the Indians on top for good with his second three-run homer in the eighth. The Indians padded the lead with two more runs in the ninth.
Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) paced a 16-hit attack with a career-best five hits and scored four runs. Wharton collected three hits to go with his record RBI total. Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodbury Forest HS/Georgia Tech) and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) added two hits apiece.
Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) got the win in relief. He allowed a run off three hits over three innings of work. Craig Brooks (Monore, NC/Parkwood HS) threw two perfect innings of relief for the save.
Lindley had three hits for Pfeiffer. Summers and Scudder each had a pair of hits.
The teams will square off again on Wednesday, this time at Newman Park with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
