Baseball Makes it Back-to-Back Wins Over Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got a late two-run homer from Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodbury Forest HS/Georgia Tech) and grabbed a 7-4 win over visiting Pfeiffer in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-7, while the Falcons fall to 5-5.
Catawba benefitted from an error and a wild pitch to plate a pair of runs in the opening inning to grab the lead. Down 3-1 in the fifth, Pfeiffer battled back to tie on a two-out, two-run single by Tanner Mathis (Hamptonville, NC).
The Indians answered right back in the home fifth. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) delivered a two-out single to plate T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech). The Indians added another run in the sixth as Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) tripled with one out and scored on a groundout by Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS).
In the eighth, Kronenfeld gave the Indians some insurance runs with a two-run homer. Pfeiffer got a run back in the ninth on a double from Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC), but that was all the Falcons could get.
Houston and Kronenfeld each had a pair of hits for Catawba. Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) picked up the win in relief. He tossed two and a third innings of scoreless ball, surrendering just one hit and fanning three.
Gray, Mathis and Kyle Hackney (Pittsboro, NC) had two hits apiece for the Falcons. Pfeiffer outhit Catawba 12-10, but the Indians walked four times and were hit three other times. Catawba pitchers did not issue a free pass.
Catawba will return to league action on Saturday against Newberry with a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The teams will close out the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
