Gerone's RBI Single Lifts Softball Over Augusta in Extras
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NY/Madison HS) singled home Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to lift host Catawba to a 2-1 win over GRU Augusta in softball action on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 4-1, while the Jaguars fall to 5-9.
The Lady Indians started the eighth with Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) placed on second as part of the international tiebreaker rule. After a single from Chandler, Tysinger was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a fly out to center by Katherine Shumaker (Branch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS). Following a walk, Gerone singled up the middle to score Chandler from second to give Catawba its win.
The Jaguars had scored first as Hannah Vaughn led off the fourth with a home run to left field. Catawba was able to tie it up in the fifth when Tysinger singled to right center with two outs and Kristen Stinnard (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS) raced all the way home from first.
Tysinger got the win in relief. She did not allow a hit over four innings, walking two and fanning seven. Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) had started and scattered three hits with a walk and three strikeouts over four frames. Tysinger and Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) each collected two hits for Catawba.
The games were part of the Catawba Invitational Tournament which will continue on Saturday and Sunday at Salisbury Community Park. The Lady Indians will next play twice on Sunday, facing Belmont Abbey at 11 a.m. and Pfeiffer at 1 p.m.
