Men's Basketball Ends Home Slate With Win Over Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba grabbed a Senior Day win over visiting Brevard, taking a 90-79 decision in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians put five players in double figures to improve to 7-17 overall and 7-13 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 4-20 and 4-16.
Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) tallied 19 points, hitting on five three-pointers, and dished out eight assists for Catawba. Kijuan Arrington (Newport News, VA/Denbigh HS/Henry CC) added 18 points, while Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA/North Hills HS) came off the bench to post a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) added a dozen points and the lone Indian senior, Chris Watson (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS/Rockingham CC), scored 10.
Brevard got 25 points from Miles Leathers, who added eight rebounds. Trevon Shaw scored 19 points and Darius Moose 15 more. Alex Moe rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The Indians played one of its best games of the year and hit on a season-high 14 three-pointers. Catawba was 14-of-29 (48%) from behind the arc. The Indians also held a 48-39 edge on the glass and committed just eight turnovers.
The game was tied on 10 occasions and the lead swapped hands 16 times. Brevard had a 42-34 lead late in the first half after a three-pointer by Moe, but Catawba went on a 11-3 run to tie it after three-pointers from Edwards, Jalen Byrd (Hickory, NC/Hickory HS) and Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS). Moose gave the Tornados a 48-45 lead at the break as he converted a three-point play with 19 seconds to go.
Catawba held the lead much of the second half, but it was tight until a 10-2 run put the Tribe up 83-71 with 5:20 remaining. Brevard closed the gap to six late before a three-pointer by Edwards and a layup by Arrington pushed the margin back to double digits.
Catawba heads to Queens on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tip with the Royals.
