SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and Newberry split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians won the opener 10-6, while the Wolves claimed an 18-2 win in the nightcap.  The Indians now stand at 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the SAC.  Newberry is 9-5 and 4-4.

Catawba rallied for the opening win.  Newberry led 6-4 after five before the Indians tied it in the sixth on a two-run homer from Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS).  Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) put Catawba on top with his two-run shot in the seventh.

Catawba added another run in the seventh and one more in the eighth for a pair of insurance runs.  Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) locked down the win as he tossed a pair of scoreless innings.  He allowed two hits and fanned one in recording his second save.

Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) collected his second win in relief.  He allowed two runs, one earned, over three and a third innings.  He scattered four hits and struck out two.

Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) put Catawba up 4-1 with a three-run homer in the third.  Newberry battled back with three of its own in the fourth.  All three runs scored when Newberry batters were hit with the bases loaded.  DJ Martinez gave the Wolves their 6-4 lead with a two-run double in the fifth.

Hawks and Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) each had three hits for Catawba.  Albert Baur, Ryan Cranmer and Jermale Paige collected two hits for Newberry in the opener.

The Wolves grabbed the split by pounding out an 18-2 win in the nightcap.  Baur had four hits and collected eight RBI.  Cranmer and Eric Barbieri each drove in three runs and posted three hits.  Alex Kirby also had three hits.

Newberry scored three times in the first and three more in the second.  Cranmer had a three-run homer in the second.  Baur doubled home two in the fourth and Barbieri followed with a two-run homer to make it 10-0.  Baur capped his day with a three-run shot in the seventh.

Catawba broke up the shutout in the sixth on a RBI single by Shepard and added a second run on an error.  Wesley Camp improved to 5-0 with the win.  He went the distance and allowed just six hits while fanning five.

The teams will finish the three-game set on Sunday at 2 p.m.
