Both Tennis Teams Fall to Mars Hill and Queens on Weekend
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College tennis teams each fell twice over the weekend to open up South Atlantic Conference play. With the losses the Catawba men fall to 6-6 on the season while the Lady Indians drop to 6-8. Both teams are 0-2 in the SAC.
The first match of the weekend came on Friday afternoon against Mars Hill at the Johnson Tennis Center. The men suffered a 6-3 loss while the women came close to victory before losing 5-4. For the women, their closest chance at victory came in the number three singles position. Sophomore Lauren Sledd battled Mars Hill’s Jade Henke in both sets but fell short with 5-7 and 6-7 sets.
On Saturday, the two teams returned to the Johnson Tennis Center to take on Queens. The Royals easily moved past Catawba with 7-2 victories on each side. For the Catawba men, Iago Montero Nunez was the only Indian to claim two wins on the day. Nunez teamed up with Jack Mordey in doubles action for the 8-0 win before winning at the #5 singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-0.
The men will host Pfeiffer on Monday at the Johnson Tennis Center at 4pm. Both teams will also host Winston-Salem State on Tuesday at the same time.
