Tampa Upends Men's Lacrosse in Home Opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Tampa got goals from seven different players in claiming an 11-5 win over host Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Spartans to 3-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.
In a rematch of last season’s Deep South Conference Tournament final, Tampa earned a measure of revenge with the win. The Spartans scored four straight goals, including all three in the second quarter, to lead 6-1 two minutes into the second half. Tampa would stretch the lead to 9-2 before Catawba tallied three times in the final nine minutes to close the gap.
Conor Whipple, Mike Morris, Jake Rooney and Justin Fitzpatrick each had a pair of goals for Tampa. Rooney and Morris each had two of the early goals to help in the 6-1 edge. Davis Hughes (Windermere, FL/W. Orange HS) had two goals for Catawba and added an assist. John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) had a goal and an assist.
Catawba held a 44-39 edge in total shots with Tampa snagging 32 ground balls to 27 for the Indians. Andrew Failla played nearly 52 minutes in goal for the Spartans and posted 10 saves. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) recorded 13 saves for Catawba.
Next up for Catawba will be a home contest against Wednesday against Saint Leo at 4 p.m.
