Baseball Wins Rubber Game to Take Newberry Series
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba won the rubber game of the three-game series with visiting Newberry, winning 7-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 9-6 and 4-5.
Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) colleted three hits and scored a pair of runs for Catawba. T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) drove in four runs and hit a big three-run homer. Albert Baur swung another hot bat for Newberry with three hits and four RBI.
Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Indians a 1-0 lead after an inning. Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) singled home a run in the third before Wharton added his home run for a 5-0 edge.
Newberry finally got to Catawba starter Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) in the fifth. Brooks had thrown three no-hit innings before a Baur double in the fourth. Baur would single home two runs in the fifth to trim the margin to 5-2.
Wharton singled home a run in the Catawba fifth, but Newberry cut the deficit to a single run in the seventh. Alex Kirby led off the inning with a solo homer and Baur chased Brooks with a two-run shot to make it 6-5.
Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) came on to record the final two outs of the seventh and added a perfect eighth. Catawba picked up an insurance run in its eighth on a sacrifice fly from Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS).
Nolan Schrenker led off the ninth with a single, but Trombino got JoJo Bradley to roll into a double play to get the Indians within an out of the win. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) entered and struck out Ryan Cranmer to post his third save with Baur on deck.
Wharton, Satterfield and Hawks had two-hit games for Catawba in an 11-hit attack. Baur was the lone Newberry batter with more than one hit.
Brooks got the win to improve to 1-2. He allowed five runs off seven hits over six and a third innings with nine strikeouts. Trombino allowed just the one hit over two and a third frames. Jonathan Rosenberger (1-2) took the loss for Newberry, giving up five runs on six hits over three innings.
Catawba will not return home to Newman Park until March 14 and next travel to Barton on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
