Baseball Grabs 5-3 Win at Barton
WILSON, NC -- Catawba got a strong start from Joe Watson (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS) and claimed a 5-3 win over host Barton in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Nixon Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-8, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-8.
Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) doubled home a run for Catawba in the second and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly.
The lead doubled in the fourth as Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) and Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) singled home runs. Watson limited Barton to just three hits over the first five innings, but the Bulldogs closed the gap in the sixth.
After a pair of one-out walks in the sixth, Dillon Rudio hit a three-run homer to make it 4-3. Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) entered and allowed a single before retiring the final two batters of the inning.
T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) hit his team-leading fourth home run to give the Indians an insurance run in the eighth. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) made those runs stand up as he pitched two perfect innings of relief to nail down his fourth save of the year.
Houston, Brooks and Beard each had two hits and a RBI for Catawba. Wharton scored two runs. Watson earned his first collegiate win in his initial start. He went five and a third innings, allowing the three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Rudio had two of the five Barton hits on the day.
Catawba returns to league action this weekend, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a three-game series that is set to start on Friday night at 6 p.m.
