Baseball gets doubleheader split behind Fairweather's shutout

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College and visiting Shippensburg split a doubleheader in baseball action at Newman Park on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) tossed a completed game as Catawba took the opener 9-0, while Adam Winters (Shippensburg, PA) tossed six shutout innings as the Raiders won the nightcap 3-0. Catawba now stands at 7-5, while Shippensburg is 2-3. Fairweather scattered eight hits over nine innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts, to record his first career shutout. Offensively, the Indians benefited from a leadoff error in the fourth and plated five runs with two outs to start the scoring. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) delivered a two-run single to start the scoring, while Blair Reynolds (King, NC) drove home two after a RBI single by Nick Lefko (Faith, NC). Catawba added two runs in the seventh on Jimbo Davisí (Salisbury, NC) team-leading fourth homer, while Reynolds capped a 2-for-5, four RBI opener with a two-run homer in the eighth. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) had three hits for Catawba, while Reynolds, Rimer and Lefko each had two hits. Andy Dangler (Chambersburg, PA) had two hits for Shippensburg, who left 10 men on base. Winters allowed just three Tribe singles over six innings of work, improving to 2-0. He had one walk and recorded six strikeouts. Matt Arnold (Carlisle, PA) allowed a hit in the seventh, but would record the save. Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC), now 3-1, took the loss for Catawba. He surrendered five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Shippensburg scored a run in the opening frame of the second game and added single runs in the sixth and seventh. In the first, Josh Bell (Loysville, PA) tripled with one out and scored on a groundout by Matt DeSanto (Williamsport, PA). DeSanto would add another RBI in the sixth as he drove home Ryan Lindstadt (Downingstown, PA), who had doubled to lead off the inning. Sean Kenneck (West Chester, PA) capped the scoring with a solo homer in the seventh. #####
