Tysinger Blanks GRU Augusta as Softball Moves to 9-1
SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Catawba softball team opened play at the Mid-South Classic on Friday with a 4-0 shutout of GRU Augusta at Tiger River Park. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 9-1, matching the best start in school history which was also done in 2007. The Jaguars fall to 7-12.
Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) was dominate in the circle as she improved to 6-0. The sophomore surrendered just three hits, allowed a runner on a hit by pitch and struck out 13. On the season, Tysinger has a miniscule 0.21 ERA and has given up just 10 hits over 33 innings with 60 strikeouts.
Catawba got all the runs they needed in the first on a three-run home run by Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS). It was her second straight game with a three-run shot. Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) started the frame with a walk and Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) reached on a bunt single prior to the long ball.
Tysinger took a no-hitter into the fifth before Mallory Ferguson singled up the middle to break up the bid. The Jaguars had back-to-back single to start the sixth, but Tysinger would fan the next three batters to end the threat.
Hyder singled home Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS) in the fourth to complete the scoring for Catawba.
The Lady Indians will continue play in the Mid-South Classic through Sunday. Saturday, Catawba is scheduled to play Alderson-Broaddus at noon and Armstrong at 6 p.m.
