Men's Lacrosse Wins Initial SAC Game Over Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a win in its initial South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse game, grabbing a 17-6 victory over visiting Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 2-3 and 0-1.
John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) led Catawba with five goals and five assists as the Indians rally back after a slow start. Tate Beason (Cary, NC/E. Chapel Hill HS) added three goals with Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) and Tyler Ulrich (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS) each scoring a pair.
Al Blackmon (Easton, PA) scored three goals with an assist for Brevard. Matthew Dropuljic (Brampton, Ontario, CANADA) added two goals, while Blair Alexandersen (Cleveland, OH) had a goal and two assists. Andrew Reilly (Delmar, NY) was tested in goal and made 21 saves as Catawba fired off 56 shots.
The Tornados opened up with the first two goals. Alexandersen tallied at the 9:33 mark and Blackman added the second with 5:24 left in the opening quarter. Catawba scored a pair of goals 46 seconds apart as Jon Williams (Hillsborough, NC/Northern HS) got the Indians even with three minutes to go in the quarter. Ridolfo put Catawba on top just inside a minute left in the first.
Blackman made it 3-3 early in the second quarter before Catawba reeled off seven straight goals. Scheich started the run midway through the second and capped it with two straight in the third quarter to give the Indians a 10-3 edge. Beason tallied all three of his goals in the fourth quarter as Catawba continued to pull away.
Catawba travels to Wingate for another league game on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
