Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- After competing as an independent for two years, the Catawba women’s lacrosse team found conference play to its liking with an 18-3 win over visiting Brevard in its first-ever South Atlantic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 0-3 and 0-1.
Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John’s Catholic HS) and Kim McConnery (Welland, Ontario, CANADA/Notre Dame HS/Monroe CC) each scored three goals for Catawba with Jones adding a pair of assists. Ebony Mills (Harrison, MD/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida), Kaleigh Reidy (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS) and Nicolette Salay (Columbus, NJ/N. Burlington Regional HS) all scored two goals.
Catawba scored the game’s first nine goals, leading 2-0 41 seconds on goals from Salay and Mills. Reidy added back-to-back tallies to make it 4-0 after eight minutes.
Julia Gasston (Auckland, NEW ZWALAND) had consecutive goals for Brevard to cut the margin to 9-2, but the Tornados would not score again until Gasston put home the final goal of the game with 25 seconds remaining.
Catawba held a 51-6 edge in shots and won 19 draw controls to four for the Tornados. Brianna Bangle (St. Paul, MN) stopped 17 shots in goal for Brevard.
Catawba will host Notre Dame College on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
