Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Brevard

SALISBURY, NC -- After competing as an independent for two years, the Catawba women’s lacrosse team found conference play to its liking with an 18-3 win over visiting Brevard in its first-ever South Atlantic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 0-3 and 0-1.

Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John’s Catholic HS) and Kim McConnery (Welland, Ontario, CANADA/Notre Dame HS/Monroe CC) each scored three goals for Catawba with Jones adding a pair of assists.  Ebony Mills (Harrison, MD/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida), Kaleigh Reidy (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS) and Nicolette Salay (Columbus, NJ/N. Burlington Regional HS) all scored two goals.

Catawba scored the game’s first nine goals, leading 2-0 41 seconds on goals from Salay and Mills.  Reidy added back-to-back tallies to make it 4-0 after eight minutes.

Julia Gasston (Auckland, NEW ZWALAND) had consecutive goals for Brevard to cut the margin to 9-2, but the Tornados would not score again until Gasston put home the final goal of the game with 25 seconds remaining.

Catawba held a 51-6 edge in shots and won 19 draw controls to four for the Tornados.  Brianna Bangle (St. Paul, MN) stopped 17 shots in goal for Brevard.
