Baseball Finishes Off Sweep of LR With Two Wins on Saturday
HICKORY, NC -- Catawba finished off a weekend sweep of host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference baseball action with a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Bears Field. The Catawba Indians claimed victories of 6-4 and 5-1 to improve to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 4-14 and 1-10.
Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) singled home ninth-inning runs to snap a 4-4 tie in the opener and Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) tossed a three-hitter in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
Catawba pulled ahead 3-0 in the opener after four innings. In the third, Satterfield doubled home a run and Hawks followed with a RBI single for that 3-0 lead. The Bears struck back in the fifth to take the lead.
With two outs, Mike Gasque singled home a run to get L-R on the scoreboard. A batter later, Ivan Vieitez singled home two more to tie it. Brandon Walker put the Bears on top with a single off reliever Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion), but that would be all Lenoir-Rhyne would get.
Catawba came right back to tie the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) and the score would remain 4-4 until the ninth.
Nick Flachofsky retired the first two Catawba batters of the ninth, but Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) singled to start the rally. After stealing second, Houston came home with the go-ahead run on a base hit from Satterfield. Hawks padded the lead as he followed with another RBI single.
Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) allowed a two out single in the bottom of the ninth, but got Walker to ground out to end it for his fifth save. Shepard blanked the Bears over his three and a third innings on three hits to improve to 3-0.
Houston finished the game with three hits and scored three runs. Satterfield and Hawks each had two hits and two RBI. Vieitez enjoyed a 4-for-5 effort in the opener for the Bears.
Brooks was in control in game two, allowing just three singles. He walked three and fanned six as he upped his record to 2-2 with the complete game.
It was the trio of Houston, Satterfield and Hawks that put Catawba up in the third inning of game two. The three strung together one-out hits in the frame with Hawks plating Houston. The Indians added two more in the fourth with Kronenfeld doubling home a run then scoring on a single from Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.).
The Bears broke through on Brooks in the fifth. Chase Hathcock and Nate Martin had back-to-back singles and Gasque hit a sacrifice fly. The Indians capped the scoring in the seventh as Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) singled home Satterfield and Hawks.
Hawks and Kronenfeld posted two hits in the win for Catawba.
Catawba travels to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt at 2 p.m.
