Softball Adds Two More Wins at Mid-South Classic, Upsets #6 Armstrong
SPARTANBURG, SC -- Catawba's softball team continued its hot start, grabbing two more wins on Saturday at the Mid-South Classic which included a 5-1 victory over sixth-ranked Armstrong. The Catawba Indians had started the day with a 2-0 shutout of Alderson-Broaddus. Catawba improves to 11-1 on the year. Alderson-Broaddus had fallen to 3-5 and Armstrong went to 9-5.
Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) allowed just three hits and no earned runs in the win over nationally-ranked Armstrong. The lone Pirate run scored after a pair of errors in the third inning. Tysinger (7-0) issued no walks and recorded a dozen strikeouts.
After Armstrong scored its run to tie it in the top of third, Catawba came right back in the bottom half to grab the lead for good. Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Kristen Stinnard (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS) singled her home and scored when Tysinger followed with a double.
The Lady Indians added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) scored on a wild pitch and Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NY/Madison HS) doubled home Tysinger.
Hyder finished with two hits and scored two runs. Alexis Mercer had two hits for Armstrong and scored the lone run.
Freshman Caroline Turner (Kenly, NC/N. Johnston HS) blanked Alderson-Broaddus in the first game of the day to improve to 3-1. She gave up only two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Turner helped herself out at the plate as she drove home the first Catawba run with a single in the third. Stinnard doubled the lead in the fourth as she singled home Gerone, who had led off the frame with a hit. Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS) had two hits for Catawba.
The Lady Indians look to continue their record-breaking start with two games on Sunday. Catawba will play Flagler at noon and conclude play vs. Bellarmine at 4 p.m.
