Women's Basketball cruises to win at NewberryNEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba College used a strong first half and defeated host Newberry 72-50 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Eleazer Gym. Junior Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Catawba, who wrapped up at least a share of the league title, improving to 20-5 overall and 10-2 in the SAC. Newberry fell to 2-21 and 0-12. Catawba jumped on Newberry early, holding the hosts to a single point over the opening nine minutes to lead 15-1. Catawba would build a 28-9 lead with 5:35 in the opening half and led 41-18 at the break. Newberry shot just 24% in the opening half and committed 16 turnovers. Locklear had 11 of her points in the opening half. Newberry never got closer than 20 points in the second half and Catawba built as much as a 32-point bulge at 70-38 with 4:23 to play. Catawba finished the game shooting 44.4% (28-of-63), while Newberry hit just 27.5% (14-of-51). Catawba also held a 43-34 edge on the boards and had just 17 turnovers to 24 for Newberry. Catawba got scoring from 10 of 11 players, including a career-high 14 points from Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA). Shirolyn Johnson (Irmo, SC) led Newberry with 17 points, while freshman Lauren Wrightson (Damascus, MD) added 10 points off the bench. Chauncey Tims (Lancaster, SC) led Newberry with 10 rebounds. #####
