Men Finish in 14th At Richard Rendleman Invitational
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men’s golf team finished in fourteenth place at the Richard Rendleman Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The two day tournament was held at the 6,665 yard, par-71 Country Club of Salisbury and hosted by Catawba. Limestone College won the tournament after a playoff with UNC Pembroke.
The Saints actually tied UNC Pembroke with a two-day total of 598 (+33), but defeated the Braves in a four-hole playoff. With all five golfers from each team competing in the playoff, Pembroke parred their top-four holes while Limestone netted a birdie and three pars on theirs to take the tournament.
Medalist honors also went to a playoff decision between Wingate’s Ben Gebhardt and Queen’s Alex Ware. The duo was tied at the end of the round with a par 142. In the playoff round the two started pretty similar down the fairway. By the third shot Ware was shooting up hill on the fringe while Gebhardt was putting downhill from the back of the green. Ware’s putt from the fringe came up short leading to a long putt from the right of the hole which went long to set up a third putt for par. The shot was unnecessary as Gebhardt two putted for birdie to claim the hole and medalist honors.
The Indians improved their scores from the first day along with the much improved weather conditions from the first round. Tyler Rutherford lead the way for the Indians with a two day total of 153. Zach Griffis shot a season low round of 73 to come in second on the team with a 154.
The Indians will return to the links on Monday, March 17th as they travel to Pinehurst for the Wingate Challenge.
