Tennis Swept by Wingate Despite Tough Battles
MONROE, NC -- The Catawba College tennis teams fell to host Wingate University by scores of 9-0 on at the WU Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference play. With the loss the Catawba men fall to 6-10 on the year and 0-4 in the conference while the Lady Indians drop to 8-9 and 1-3. For Wingate the men go to 6-4 and 4-0 and the women improve to 8-2 and 4-0, respectively.
In men’s action the Indians fought hard despite falling in all matchups. The #2 duo for Catawba of Matthew Nicholson and Michael Patch forced the match to 9-8 before falling. Pierce Hoover and Jack Mordey also came close for the Indians going 8-6 in their pairing. Wingate used the momentum to run away with singles play to sweep the pairings.
For the women, the Lady Indians challenged the Bulldogs in similar fashion in doubles play. Liz Renteria and Sloan Kessler also forced a 9-8 finish before falling to Wingate’s Ali Evers and Becca Thomas at the #1 doubles. In singles action Renteria played tough forcing a third set tie breaker going 4-6, 6-3 and 1-0 with Evers.
Catawba will return to the home courts on Wednesday to host SAC opponent Coker at 2pm.
