Baseball Comes Up a Run Short at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, NC -- Host Belmont Abbey grabbed a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-3 win in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders improve to 8-12, while the Catawba Indians fall to 9-9.
Belmont Abbey scored three times in the first. After a leadoff walk, Kayden Krause drove in a run on a double and scored on a triple from Nick Bienlich. Catawba threatened early, but left a pair of runners on in the first, third and fifth innings. The Crusaders added their final run on a RBI single from Michael Falsetti in the fifth.
Catawba would break through in the sixth. T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) led off with his team-leading fifth home run and Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) brought in a run with a two-out single to cut the Tribe deficit in half.
In the ninth, Wharton hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS). With two outs, Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) drew a walk and pinch-runner Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, FL/Raines HS) got to second on a wild pitch. The Indians failed to get the run home and would fall by a single run.
Satterfield was on four times for Catawba with two hits, a walk and was hit by a pitch. Zubillaga and Shepard also had two hits. Quinn Hawksworth had two hits for Belmont Abbey.
Aaron Rumberg (1-1) got the win for the Crusaders. He allowed two runs off seven hits over six frames. Weston Clarke pitched the ninth for his second save. Joe Watson (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS) took the loss with the rough start for Catawba. Matt Farmakis (Sharpesburg, GA/Northgate HS) threw three and two-thirds shutout innings of relief and allowed just three hits.
Catawba returns to league action this weekend with a three-game series at Lincoln Memorial. The teams open on Friday at 4 p.m. and finish up with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
