Catawba Splits With Lees-McRae; Women 8-1, Men 3-6
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College Tennis teams split with Lees McRae on Wednesday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. The Lady Indians rolled past Lees McRae 8-1 in their matchup while the Catawba men fell 6-3 to the Bobcats. With the win, the Catawba women improve to 9-9 on the year. The Indians dropped to 7-10 with the loss. For Lees McRae the men improve to 3-5 and the women fall to 1-7.
In women’s action, Catawba got out to an early lead by sweeping doubles play. Singles action was not much closer for the Lady Indians by taking five of the six sets. Hillary Lutz grabbed the lone point for the Bobcats with 6-3, 6-1 wins over Lauren Sledd at the #2 flight. With the exception of Lutz the Lady Indians surrendered just 6 games all day in singles.
For the men, matches were much closer for Catawba despite the loss. Catawba took the early lead with a split in doubles action. Catawba was able to take the first two flights before surrendering the third flight 8-4. In singles action, Lees-McRae changed the momentum and never gave it up by taking five of the six matches. Aaron Vanhorenbeck claimed Catawba’s only point with a three set win over Garrett Lackey. Vanhorenbeck went 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 in the victory.
The Catawba teams return to the courts on Tuesday, March 18th, as they host Barton at 2 pm.
