SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored a pair of unearned runs to top visiting UNC Pembroke 2-0 in softball action on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians improve to 13-2, while the Braves fall to 12-10.  Only the first game of the scheduled doubleheader was played due to cold weather and the threat of winter weather in the area.

Catawba scored the only runs of the game in the third inning.  Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) walked with one out and Kristen Stinnard (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS) followed with a bunt single.  Both moved up a base on a groundout and scored when Katherine Shumaker's (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS) grounder to short was thrown away at first.

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) made those two runs hold up.  She pitched the complete game, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts.  She did walk two and hit two, but was able to improve to 9-0.  Natalie Klemann (6-4) took the loss for UNCP.  She went the distance, surrendering four hits, walking five and striking out three.

Shumaker, Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS) and Morgan Brann (Beulaville, NC/E. Duplin HS) joined Stinnard with the hits for Catawba.

UNC Pembroke's best scoring chance came in the second.  Tysinger hit the leadoff batter and Taylor Cloninger reached on a bunt single.  Brea Hartley laced a line drive to first, but Brann snagged it and doubled Cloninger off first.  Tysinger got a ground out to end the frame.  She also got a ground out and a strikeout to strand a runner at third with one out in the third.

Karlee Wilson had the other hit for the Braves which came to leadoff the fifth.  UNCP again got a runner to third, this time with two outs, before Tysinger induced another groundout to end the inning.  Catawba had chances to score in the first, fourth and sixth frames, but stranded two runners each time.

The Lady Indians travel to Dahlonega, GA, this weekend to take part in the Captain D's Classic.  Catawba will play North Georgia and Kentucky Wesleyan on both Saturday and Sunday.  The first game Saturday is against North Georgia at 4 p.m.
