Women's Soccer wins key regional tilt

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba freshman Mary Attea (Kenmore,NY) scored the match's lone goal as the Lady Indians defeated visiting Francis Marion 1-0 in women's soccer action on Monday night at Frock Field. Catawba, ranked eighth in the NCAA II Southeast Region, improves to 6-2-1, recording its sixth straight win and fifth by shutout. Francis Marion, rated seventh in the region, falls to 7-3-1. After a scoreless first half, it was Francis Marion that appeared it would draw first blood in the match. Just 10 minutes into the half, a shot by Julia Lufiu (Waldorf, MD) hit the post and later Sabina Sapienza (Shoreham, NY) fired just wide. Then Catawba would find the net on just its fourth shot. Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA) broke through the Patriot defense and was brought down after splitting two defenders just after pushing the ball ahead to Attea who ran in on a breakaway. Attea fired just inside the right post in the 66th minute from just inside the penalty box for the lone goal. Catawba keeper Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) made seven saves in recording the shutout. The junior increased her scoreless minute streak to 481, just 81 shy of her own school record.
