Rally Comes up Short for Baseball at LMU
HARROGATE, TN -- Josh Coker hit a pair of home runs and earned a save to lead host Lincoln Memorial to a 13-12 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday at Hennon Field. The Railsplitters improve to 13-5-1 overall and 9-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians drop to 10-9 and 5-4.
Coker hit his first home run to jump start a seven-run second inning for LMU. His second capped a five-run sixth that put the Railsplitters up 12-5. Jonathan Lowe and Kelvin Brito each had three hits in the slugfest as each team collected 17 hits.
Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) drove in four runs for Catawba. Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) had three hits and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) hit a home run for the Indians.
Hawks had a two-run single in the top of the sixth that cut a one-time Catawba deficit from 7-1 to 7-5. LMU got those runs back with a big sixth inning of its own thanks to Coker's round tripper.
The Indians looked to be going quietly in the seventh with two outs and no one on until a walk, a double and a two-run single from Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) got a rally started. Kronenfeld doubled home another run and Hawks singled home two more to make it 12-10.
Down 13-10 entering the eighth, Catawba loaded the bases with one out. Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) singled home two runs, but a double play ended the inning. The Indians put the tying run on with two outs in the ninth, but pinch-runner Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, FL/Raines HS) was thrown out trying to advance to second.
Hawks, Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS), T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech), Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) and Jon Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) had two hits for Catawba.
John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) took the loss for the Indians and fell to 2-2 as he could not get out of the second. Michael Tombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) blanked LMU for three innings before getting into trouble in the sixth.
Logan Sawyer improved to 4-2 for LMU. He allowed eight runs (five earned) off 11 hits over six and two-thirds innings. Coker pitched the final two and a third innings and allowed a pair of runs off three hits in picking up his sixth save.
Catawba left 11 on base in the loss.
The teams will finish off the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
