Corace Sparks Second-Half Surge as Women's Lacrosse Takes 10-8 Win at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba got three goals from Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) and grabbed a 10-8 victory over host Wingate in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field. The Catawba Indians even their overall mark at 3-3 and improve to 2-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 1-2 and 0-2.
Wingate scored the first two goals, but Catawba came back on goals from Corace, Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic HS) and Kim McConnery (Welland, Ontario, CANADA/Notre Dame HS/Monroe CC) to lead 3-2. A goal from Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida) and a second from Jones pushed the lead to 5-2 midway through the first half.
The Bulldogs rallied back to pull even by the half. Logan Bounds notched the tying goal with 2:19 left before the break.
Corace scored twice for Catawba in the first eight minutes of the second half to put the Lady Indians up 7-5. Wingate closed within 8-7 on a goal from Allie Holland with 14:05 remaining, but Mills tallied at the 10:30 mark for a two-goal lead. Nicolette Salay (Columbus, NJ/N. Burlington Regional HS) made it 10-7 with 8:05 left to give Catawba a cushion.
Corace led Catawba with three goals and an assist. Mills and Salay each had two goals and one assist. Jones tallied twice. Kaelin Evans scored three goals for the Bulldogs with goalie Jayda Lynch making a dozen saves.
The Lady Indians doubled up Wingate 28-14 in shots.
Catawba will face another SAC contest next Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 2 p.m. contest.
