Softball Drops Pair at Captain D's Classic
DAHLONEGA, GA -- Catawba dropped a pair of softball games on Saturday in the Captain D's Classic hosted at 'The Hill' by the University of North Georgia. The Catawba Indians fell 3-1 to 11th-ranked North Georgia then 10-2 to Kentucky Wesleyan. Catawba is now 13-4 on the season. North Georgia is 16-6 and Kentucky Wesleyan 5-7.
Catawba led North Georgia through five innings, but the Nighthawks got off the deck in the sixth. With two outs, Ansley Phillips singled home the tying run and Tiffanie Burns followed with a two-run homer. Victoria Sink (8-1) made those runs hold up as she limited the Lady Indians to just one run on seven hits.
The Lady Indians threatened in the third, but left the bases loaded. In the fourth, Catawba once again filled the bases and got a run in on a single by Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS). Catawba only got one baserunner after the fourth which was erased on a double play in the seventh.
Hyder had three hits for Catawba. Taylor Adams (Smithfield, NC/N. Johnston HS) picked up a pair of hits. Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) took her first loss. She gave up the three runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts.
Kentucky Wesleyan jumped on Catawba early. The Panthers scored two unearned runs in the first and Kaci Overlgoenner capped a three-run second with a two-run homer. Overlgoenner singled home two runs in the third and Ashlea Holt ended the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth.
Catawba scored its two runs in the third on a RBI single from Tysinger and a run-scoring double by Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS). Shumaker had two hits for the Lady Indians, while Hyder capped a five-hit day with a pair of doubles.
The Lady Indians will play North Georgia and Kentucky Wesleyan again on Sunday. The first game will be Kentucky Wesleyan at noon.
