Softball Finishes Captain D's Classic With A Pair Of Loses
DAHLONEGA, GA -- Catawba lost two games on Sunday afternoon to conclude play in the Captain D's Classic hosted at 'The Hill' by the University of North Georgia. The Catawba Indians were shutout 3-0 by Kentucky Wesleyan then lost a 2-1 decision to 11th-ranked North Georgia. Catawba is now 13-6. Kentucky Wesleyan went to 6-8 and North Georgia to 18-6.
Kentucky Wesleyan scored twice in the top of the first to grab the early lead in Catawba's first game of the day. With two outs, Ashley Crooke singled home a run and Kyli Smithson brought home a run as she drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The best scoring chance for the Lady Indians came in the second, loading the bases with one out. Jessica Carmon worked out of it with a popup and line out. Catawba put two on in the sixth, but hit into an inning ending double play. A two-out single from Smithson in the seventh added an insurance run for the Panthers.
Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS) had two of the five Catawba hits and also drew a walk. Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly) took the loss, but worked out of trouble most of the day to allow just three runs. She surrendered seven hits, walked six and struck out six. Carmon threw a five-hit shutout with one strikeout.
In the final game versus North Georgia, the Lady Indians again fell behind in the first. The Nighthawk run in the opening frame scored on a two-out error. Courtney Poole doubled the lead with a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Catawba got its run in the fifth. Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS). Catawba got the leadoff batter on in the seventh, but North Georgia was able to turn a game-ending double play.
Poole also got the win in the circle. She gave up the run on five hits with three strikeouts. Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) fell to 9-2 with the loss. She allowed just one earned run on five hits and also fanned three. Tysinger had two of the five Catawba hits.
The Lady Indians will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday with a doubleheader against GRU Augusta at Whitley Field at 1:30 p.m.
