Softball drops three of four in recent action

Catawba College posted a 1-3 record in recent softball action. The Lady Indians split a doubleheader with Pfeiffer on Sunday, winning 7-0, then losing 2-1. On Monday, Catawba dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Limestone, falling 12-1 and 2-0. Catawba now stands at 5-3 on the season. Against Pfeiffer, Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) tossed a complete-game two hitter at the Falcons. She walked none and recorded six strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year. Catawba got its offense started in the fifth, breaking a scoreless tie with three runs. Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) led off with a double and later scored on a single by Stacey Handy (Advance, NC). Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) followed with a RBI single, while Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) drove home a run on a groundout. The Lady Indians added four insurance runs in the sixth, benefiting from several Pfeiffer errors. McDowell had the only RBI, finishing the opener with two hits and two RBI. Catawba would out-hit Pfeiffer 10-5 in the second game, but stranded nine runners. The Lady Indians took the lead in the fourth on a RBI single by Jessica Davies (Solvay, NY), but Pfeiffer scored two unearned runs in the fourth to take the lead. Davies, along with Stacey Handy and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD), collected two hits in the loss. Errors would be costly in the opener at Limestone on Monday. The Saints scored 10 runs in the opening frame with only two being earned. The lone Catawba run came on a pinch-hit single by Janie Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) in the fourth. Phelps held Limestone to four hits in the second game, but Catawba left 11 on base. Stacey Handy and Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) each had two hits. #####
