Baseball Knocks Off #16 Mount Olive 10-9
MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Catawba outlasted Mount Olive and upset the 16th-ranked Trojans 10-9 in baseball action on Tuesday night at Scarborough Field. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) collected three hits, drove in two runs and earned a save with a scoreless ninth to help lift the visitors. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 11-11 overall, while Mount Olive falls to 15-8.
Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) also had three hits and a pair of RBI. His two-run double in the seventh erased an 8-7 deficit after Mount Olive had rallied from an early 6-1 hole. Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) homered and drove in two, while Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) had a pair of doubles.
Brandon Reitano drove in four runs on a pair of hits with three walks for Mount Olive. Jay Gonzalez, Rob Shipman, Justin Manning and Cody Britt also had two hits for the Trojans.
The Indians jumped on top with four runs in the top of the first. After a Houston single, Kronenfeld and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) doubled home runs. Brooks brought home the final two of the frame on a two-out double.
Shepard homered in the second and picked up another RBI in the third to stake the Indians to the 6-1 lead. The Trojans struck for three in the third, benefiting from a Catawba error to start the inning. The Indians turned a big double play with the bases loaded and none out to help stay on top.
Reitano rallied the Trojans over the middle frames. He doubled home two runs in the fourth and singled home two in the sixth to give Mount Olive an 8-7 lead. Houston delivered a double with the bases loaded and one in the seventh to put the Indians back up and Shepard made it 10-8, scoring on a wild pitch.
Mount Olive plated a run in the seventh and got Reitano to third with two outs in the eighth before Shepard got a pop up to end the inning. Brooks entered in the ninth and retired three straight after issuing a leadoff walk to grab his second save. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) got the win, allowing a run off four hits over two innings.
Catawba returns to Newman Park after three weeks on the road to host Anderson in a league series that will open on Friday night at 6 p.m.
