SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College softball team opened up South Atlantic Conference action with a doubleheader sweep of Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians took down Mars Hill by scores of 4-0 and 6-0 to improve to 17-6 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Mars Hill Lions fall to 12-8 and 0-2.
In the first game the Lady Indians struck early. In the first inning, a double by Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) scored Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Indians would not need to score again, but would add insurance in the third when a Lion error in right field brought in freshman Kristen Stinnard (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS).
In the sixth, Morgan Brann (Beulaville, NC/E. Duplin HS) would give the Indians more insurance as she unloaded a two-run homer over the left field wall.
Tysinger pitched another complete game to tally the win for Catawba and improve to 11-2 on the year. Tysinger struck out eight while giving up just four hits and stranding six runners in posting her third shutout.
Mars Hill’s Taylor Hussey tossed a complete game in the loss, falling to 4-4 on the season. Hussey gave up six hits while posting three strikeouts.
In game two, the Lady Indians pulled away quickly again as they put four across the plate in the first inning. With runners at second and third, Emily D. Huneycutt started things off with a one-out sacrifice fly that brought in Stinnard. A Taylor Adams (Smithfield, NC/N. Johnston HS) line drive up the middle would bring in Tysinger with two outs. Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville) followed with a doubled to left, setting up a two-run single from Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS).
Catawba would score on an error in the fourth and a wild pitch in the sixth for its final runs.
