Snyder pitches Baseball to win over Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, NC Junior Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) scattered five hits over eight innings as Catawba defeated host Methodist, ranked 10th in NCAA III, 4-2 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Shelley Field. The win improves the Indians to 8-5, while Methodist suffers its first loss, falling to 7-1. The Monarchs scored one run in the fourth inning when Jesus Adames scored on a groundout by Tom Matuseski. Adames scored again in the eighth when Matuseski reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error to second base by Snyder. Methodist had runners on second and third in the sixth, but Matuseski lined out to left field to end the threat. In the ninth inning with Jake Talley (Royersford, PA) on in relief for Catawba, the Monarchs had runners on first and second. However, Talley got Adames to fly out to centerfield, ending the game to record his first save. Catawba scored twice in the first off Methodist starter Eric Autry. Blair Reynolds (King, NC) led off with a single, and later scored on Spence Southard's (Greensboro, NC) double to centerfield. Southard then scored on Matt Baker's (Charlote, NC) infield single. The Indians made it 3-0 in the fourth when David Hughes (Apex, NC) scored on a wild pitch, and shortstop Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) finished off the Catawba scoring in the seventh with a towering solo home run to left field off Methodist relief pitcher Casey Varnell. First baseman Jimmy Ross went 2-for-3 for Methodist, while Autry fell to 0-1 on the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Varnell recorded four strikeouts in two innings. For Catawba, Southard went 2-for-5 with two doubles. Snyder improved to 3-1 on the season. He walked two and struck out four. #####
