Hanes Caps Baseball's Sweep of Anderson With Walk Off Home Run
SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) hit a pinch-hit, walk off home runs to cap a weekend sweep of visiting Anderson in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians claimed wins of 9-3 and 4-3 to improve to 14-11 overall and 9-5 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 9-18 and 7-8.
Hanes stepped in to lead off the seventh and connected on a 1-1 pitch to right field for his first homer of the year. The home run capped a rally by the Indians, who trailed 3-2 going to the bottom of the sixth.
Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech), who went 6-for-7 in the doubleheader, led off the sixth with a single, stole second and went to third on wild pitch. After a groundout, Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) singled up the middle to tie the score. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) pitched a perfect seventh to set the stage for Hanes.
Anderson took its first lead of the series to start the final game on a solo homer by Steven Cooper. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) answered for Catawba on his solo shot in the second. Each team scored a run in the third, Kyle Bailey singled home a run for the Trojans and Kronenfeld plated a run for Catawba.
In the sixth, Anderson took the lead on a disputed home run. Bailey hit a ball down the left line that appeared to drift foul, but was ruled a home run to give the Trojans a 3-2 edge. McClintock (3-0) entered later in the inning to strand two runners and went on to claim the win as he retired all four men he faced.
Landon Beck (2-3) took the loss for Anderson. He allowed four runs, three earned with six strikeouts. Bailey and Cooper each had two hits for the Trojans.
Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) is still hunting his first win for the Indians. He went five and a third strong innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Grant fanned seven. Kronenfeld had half of Catawba’s six hits.
Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) doubled for Catawba to lead off the opener and scored on a single from Kronenfeld to five the Indians an early lead. T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) hit a two-run homer in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1.
Anderson got a home run from Garrett Bernardo and a RBI single from Bailey to cut the margin to 4-3 in the fifth. Catawba got those runs back in the sixth as Wharton doubled home Hanes and scored on a sacrifice fly by Houston.
John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) earned the win and upped his record to 3-2. He went six frames, allowing three runs on six hits and posted seven strikeouts. Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) threw two shutout frames and McClintock closed out the final inning.
Kronenfeld had three more hits, including a RBI triple in the ninth. Wharton had two hits and three RBI. Hanes picked up two hits in the opener and scored twice.
Bailey, Bernardo, Nathan Galliford and David Jones all had two hits for the Trojans in the opener. Thomas Goodman (2-3) took the loss. He went five and a third innings, allowing six runs on nine hits.
Catawba will host currently 16th-ranked Mount Olive on Tuesday at Newman Park with first pitch time set for 5 p.m.
