Men's Lacrosse Can't Overcome First Half Deficit at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Host Mars Hill used a big second quarter to claim a 14-8 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Mears Stadium. The Lions got four goals from Jimmy McBride in improving to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-4 and 2-1.
John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) led Catawba with two goals and two assists. Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic HS) also had a pair of goals. Josh Reedy (Lake Mary, FL/Lake Mary HS) and Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) each had a goal and an assist.
Adam Zulak followed McBride with three goals for the Lions. Anthony Malcolm had two goals with four assists , while Ryan Sage also put home two goals.
After the teams each scored a goal in the first quarter, the Lions scored six unanswered goals in the second to take a 7-1 lead to the break. The Indians tallied twice in the first three minutes of the third quarter to close within four, but that was as close as Catawba would get.
Catawba held a 32-31 edge in shot while the Lions had the advantage in ground balls (41-28) and won 15 of 25 face-offs. Mars Hill goalie Patrick McMahon made 15 saves. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) recorded five saves over the first three quarters for Catawba. Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Ponte Vedra HS) played the final quarter and made three saves.
Catawba will return to action at Shuford Stadium on Saturday, hosting Tusculum at 7 p.m.
