ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba first baseman Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) and Wingate starting pitcher Ben Currie were key factors in their teams claiming baseball series victories over the weekend and were named the South Atlantic Conference’s Players of the Week. It was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
SAC Baseball Player of the Week | Paul Kronenfeld, Catawba
Kronenfeld batted .733 last week, including three hits in each game of Catawba’s series sweep of Anderson. The senior finished with 11 hits in 15 at-bats overall, and added three walks for a .778 on-base percentage.
After opening the week with two doubles and two runs in a 10-9 Catawba win over Mount Olive on Tuesday, Kronenfeld combined to go 9-for-11 at the plate with a home run, a triple, six runs and five RBI in the Anderson series. He finished the week with a 1.200 slugging percentage.
Kronenfeld currently ranks third in the SAC with a .379 batting average.
SAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week | Ben Currie, Wingate
Currie tossed a seven-inning complete-game shutout on Saturday in the final contest of Wingate’s series with Mars Hill, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win and a series victory over the Lions.
The senior struck out six and allowed just seven hits – all singles - in the game, which remained scoreless until the seventh inning. He escaped a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the third to preserve the shutout.
On the season, Currie is now 4-1 with a 3.24 ERA, and his 41 strikeouts are tied for third-most in the conference.
