Women's Basketball claims 17th straight win at home

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College closed out its regular season with its 17th straight home win, defeating visiting Carson-Newman 80-71 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win improves the Lady Indians to 22-5 overall and 12-2 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 15-12 and 9-5. Catawba, the SAC Champions, will host Newberry in the opening round of the league tournament on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. Carson-Newman, the #2 seed, will host a game against an opponent to be determined on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Catawba trailed only briefly at the outset and led for good after a three-pointer by senior Desiree Pugh (Norlina, NC) with 18:09 left, giving the Lady Indians a 5-4 edge. Catawba pulled out to a 10-point lead at the 12-minute mark at 20-10, but Carson-Newman rallied back to trail 36-32 at the break. The Lady Indians would used an 8-2 spurt to get back its double-digit cushion at 52-42 with 12:23 remaining in the contest and held between a six and 10 point advantage for much of the remainder of the contest. Carson-Newman made one run to cut the deficit to 57-55 on a layin by Tiffany Parker (Newnan, GA) with 7:52 left, but Catawba answered with a layin by Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) and a three-pointer by Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) to gain a 62-55 lead. Catawba shot 56% in the final half and finished the game at 48%, while the Lady Eagles converted 42%. The Lady Indians enjoyed an advantage at the free throw line, converting 21-of-26 tries to just 11-of-14 for Carson-Newman. Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) led Catawba, posting a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Cox also added 19 points. Pugh reached double figures with 11 points for Catawba. Monica Ashburn (Clarkrange, TN) led Carson-Newman with 22 points, while Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, TN) added 20. Parker had a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards. #####
