Wharton's RBI Single Caps Three-Run Ninth as Baseball Takes 6-5 Win Over Mount Olive
SALISBURY, NC -- T.J. Wharton's (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) two-out, RBI single up the middle capped a three-run ninth as Catawba rallied to top 30th-ranked Mount Olive 6-5 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians notched their fifth straight win in climbing to 15-11 overall. The Trojans fall to 17-10.
The Trojans had taken a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth. Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) doubled to start the inning, but Trojan reliever Zach Bernard (0-2) struck out the next two batters. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) kept the inning alive with an infield single to third.
Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) doubled to left to plate Kronenfeld and Brooks was able to score as the ball got under the glove of Bradon Reitano to tie the game. Wharton followed with a single up the middle to end the contest.
Catawba led 3-2 going to the seventh before the Trojans scored twice with two outs. Reitano singled home the tying run and Rob Shipman followed with a double for Mount Olive's first lead of the game. Justin Manning singled home a run in the ninth for the 5-3 edge.
Beard enjoyed a three-hit day for Catawba. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) had two hits and a pair of RBI. He singled a run home in the first and homered in the fourth to put the Indians up 3-2. Wharton also had two hits.
Reitano had three hits for the Trojans and had a pair of RBI. Manning and Zak Orrison each had two hits.
Brooks picked up the win for Catawba and improved to 5-2. Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) kept Mount Olive quiet in the middle innings. He pitched two and a third scoreless innings on three hits.
Catawba returns to league action this weekend, hosting Coker for a three-game series. The opener is set for Friday night at 6 p.m.
