Brooks Fans Career-High 12 Batters as Baseball Blasts Coker 9-1
SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) allowed just one run over seven innings, while striking out a career-high 12 batters as Catawba defeated visiting Coker 9-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians win for the seventh straight outing and improve to 16-11 overall and 10-5 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 16-10 and 7-8.
Catawba connected on three home runs over the first three innings in building a 5-1 edge. After a two-out home run by Coker's T.J. Giczkowski in the first, the Indians answered as Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech).
T.J. Wharton's (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Greensboro Tech) gave Catawba the lead with his solo home run in the second. Kronenfeld homered for Catawba in the third then, after a walk, Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) added a two-run homer that hit on the top of the wall and bounced over.
That was more than enough support for Brooks (6-2), who limited Coker to just three hits. The lone run he allowed was the homer to Giczkowski. Brooks walked three with his 12 strikeouts. Chase Spivey led off the Coker second with a single, but Brooks would not allow another hit until Tyler Bires singled with two outs in the seventh.
Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) doubled home two runs for Catawba in the sixth and Satterfield added another RBI in the seventh with a triple that scored Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS). Satterfield scored the final run on a ground out by Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS).
Satterfield collected three RBI off his two extra-base hits. Houston, Wharton and Richardson also had a pair of hits. Kronenfeld and Richardson plated two runs.
Matt Prosser (4-3) took the loss for Coker. He went six innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits.
