WINGATE, NC -- Junior Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead Catawba to a 10-4 win over host Wingate to open a weekend South Atlantic Conference baseball series on Friday night at Christopher Stadium.  The Catawba Indians win for the 10th straight game in improving to 19-11overall and 13-5 in the SAC.  The Bulldogs fall to 21-9 and 15-6.

Houston drove in five runs on the night with three hits.  His grand slam in the third made it 9-1.  Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) also homered for Catawba.

The offense backed strong pitching from Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS), who improved to 7-2.  He allowed four runs off four hits while walking three and striking out seven over seven innings.  Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) allowed just one hit in shutting out Wingate over the final two frames.

Justin Somers accounted for all the Bulldog runs.  He hit a solo home run in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth.  Eric Serra reached base twice for Wingate as he walked and then doubled in the seventh.  Olen Little (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up nine runs (six earned) off 10 hits, as Catawba knocked him out after three innings.

Catawba used a pair of Wingate errors to plate three runs in the first inning.  Houston led off the game with a single and later came home on an error.  Zubillaga had a sacrifice fly and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) doubled home a run.

Houston hit a solo homer in the second and added his grand slam in the third as Catawba took control.  Zubillaga had led off the third with a home run.  Satterfield capped the scoring for the Indians on his homer in the fourth.

Satterfield, Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) and Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) each had two hits for Catawba.  The Indians out-hit Wingate 13-5.

The teams are scheduled to complete the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
